I stay very up-to-date through social media and this is a trend that has been developing across all industries, mortgages included. Some companies, such as mine, are hiring diversity and inclusion officers and creating committees

Leticia Lucio Vu, Multicultural Market Manager, Colonial National Mortgage

With over 20 years dedicated to mortgages, Vu brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry, and, in particular to her many areas of expertise, which include business development, employee training, and diversity and multicultural lending. When asked why she decided to pursue a career in mortgages, Vu said:

"I was in the middle of purchasing my first home when the loan officer I was working with mentioned that they needed some front desk help. I originally thought of my co-worker, but when I spoke to the manager she thought I would be a perfect fit just based on my phone voice! I met up with her and was intrigued with what she had to say, so I took the job."

Not long after the serendipitous encounter, Vu was offered a loan officer assistant position. She quickly learned the ropes, honing skills such as loan processing, underwriting, and putting a file together, and was soon promoted to loan officer. Vu has spent the ensuing two decades helping clients obtain the means to buy a home as a top-tier performer with a niche in the bilingual market.

Over the course of her career, Vu built a strong database of contacts both within her local market and throughout the country. Today, she has moved away from loan origination and into business and product development, recruiting, and training within Colonial’s multicultural segment. Her extensive experience and diverse skill set allow her not only to assist home buyers, but also to help advise other loan officers and branch managers in serving their own clients.

As a thought leader in her industry, Vu keeps her eye on the latest developments in the mortgage industry. In particular, as multicultural market manager, she prioritizes diversity and inclusion. She noted:

"I stay very up-to-date through social media and this is a trend that has been developing across all industries, mortgages included. Some companies, such as mine, are hiring diversity and inclusion officers and creating committees. This way they can make sure they are bringing in the right talent and that their employees feel a sense of inclusiveness so that they can retain that talent."

In order to stay as up to date as possible on the ever-evolving importance of diversity and inclusion, Vu is actively involved with the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals where she previously served as the president of the Houston chapter. Nationally, she has been entrusted with the expansion of other chapters in the market and has successfully launched two to date. Vu is also a graduate of the NAHREP leadership academy.
