"On the employment side there is a fair amount of law being made concerning independent contractors versus employees and the application of minimum wage, hours, tax withholdings, etc. That's everything from Uber drivers to cocktail waitresses in that the companies are always trying to set them up as independent contractors so they don't have to pay the employment FICA or worry about minimum wage and overtime. There's a fair amount of law coming out on the employment side that I follow."

Frederic (Rick) M. Shulman, Principal, Price, Meese, Shulman & D'Arminio, P.C.

With over 35 years dedicated to law, Mr. Shulman brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and in particular to his area of specialization, commercial litigation. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. Shulman said:

"After graduating from YU, I enrolled in a four-year joint J.D./MBA program at Columbia University in New York City. The first year was a hundred percent law course and I discovered that I liked the intellectual rigor of law school. I ended up dropping the MBA program and just staying in law. There was no way I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer when I was young, though. No idea. I just kind of fell into it. I enjoyed the law school experience, and decided to concentrate my professional life there."

At his firm, Mr. Shulman concentrates on business matters of various types, including dispute resolutions, purchases and sales of businesses, commercial real estate and personal property leasing and licensing, real estate, employment, and contractual matters. He principally represents individuals and companies in the service industry in New York and New Jersey, acting on behalf of those companies in their corporate, commercial, real estate and banking relationships. His target market is in small to midsize businesses, focusing on commercial, transactional real estate, banking and employment counseling, and their associated litigation matters.

With expertise in a broad range of areas within the law, Mr. Shulman distinguishes himself from his peers and colleagues through his attention to detail and the personalized representation he provides to each client. He prides himself on accessibility and responsiveness, making himself readily available to his clients and understanding the importance of robust, transparent communication.

As a thought-leader in his field, Mr. Shulman keeps his finger on the pulse of prevailing trends in the industries relevant to his work. In particular, he has been paying close attention to the increasing number of independent contractors with the rise of the so-called 'gig economy'. He noted:

"On the employment side there is a fair amount of law being made concerning independent contractors versus employees and the application of minimum wage, hours, tax withholdings, etc. That’s everything from Uber drivers to cocktail waitresses in that the companies are always trying to set them up as independent contractors so they don’t have to pay the employment FICA or worry about minimum wage and overtime. There’s a fair amount of law coming out on the employment side that I follow."

Mr. Shulman is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and the Bergen County Bar Association.
