The Expert Network celebrates its newest member, Attorney Elizabeth A. Shollenberger

Elizabeth A. ShollenbergerAttorney at Law, has joined The Expert Network, an invitation only service for distinguished professionals. Ms. Shollenberger has been chosen as a Distinguished Lawyer™ based on peer reviews and ratings, dozens of recognitions, and accomplishments achieved throughout her career.

Ms. Shollenberger outshines others in her field due to her extensive educational background, numerous awards and recognitions, and career longevity. She received her A.B. in public and international affairs with a concentration in Urban affairs from Princeton University in 1978 and went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Yale University School of Law in 1981. Her awards and recognitions include the Marilyn Stagg Award for Service to the Democratic Party in 2014, the Legal Services Award from the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in 2007, the Thurgood Marshall Award from the Association of the Bar of the City of New York for pro bono representation of Florida death row inmates in 1997, and a Community Service Award from BASTA, a group dedicated to improving the conditions in and around the Third Street Men’s Shelter on the Lower East Side in 1993.

"I'm working in areas of law where people don't necessarily have representation. The lawyers who are suing them have the 'home court advantage' because virtually every landlord and every creditor appears with counsel. Every criminal defendant has an attorney. In landlordtenant matters that's not the case, and as a result many people have to go to court on their own. The legislature should provide funding for counsel so that people who are facing eviction have as many rights as someone who is accused of stealing a car."

Elizabeth A. Shollenberger, Attorney at Law

With 34 years dedicated to law, Ms. Shollenberger brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry, and in particular to her area of specialization, protecting individuals' legal rights against landlords, banks, creditors and the State. When asked why she decided to pursue a career in law, Ms. Shollenberger said:

"I have known for a long time that having a lawyer in a dispute with another party makes a big difference. And I wanted to be that difference for people."

Today, as a private practitioner, Ms. Shollenberger’s work often still focuses on representing clients in crisis – tenants facing eviction, parents separated from children, clients denied benefits (including unemployment, disability, and Medicaid) and consumers needing help in enforcing their rights. She also does extensive work in election law, primarily working to ensure that her clients have access to the ballot.

As a thought-leader in her industry, Ms. Shollenberger believes that a person in danger of losing his home is entitled to the same legal counsel that a person accused of a crime is afforded. She noted:

"I’m working in areas of law where people don't necessarily have representation. The lawyers who are suing them have the ‘home court advantage’ because virtually every landlord and every creditor appears with counsel. Every criminal defendant has an attorney. In landlord-tenant matters that's not the case, and as a result many people have to go to court on their own. The legislature should provide funding for counsel so that people who are facing eviction have as many rights as someone who is accused of stealing a car."

Ms. Shollenberger is the Chair of the White Plains Democratic City Committee and on the Executive Committee of the Westchester County Democratic Committee. She is a member of the New York State Democratic Committee, New York State Bar Association, and the Westchester Women’s Bar Association, as well as a Volunteer for the Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office (CLARO).
