With over 25 years dedicated to Medicine, Saba brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and, in particular, to his area of expertise in aerodigestive tract and esophageal cancer. When asked why Saba decided to go into medicine, he said:
"I needed to help people. That was my main goal, essentially to make a difference in the lives of people."
As a thought-leader in his industry, Saba has perhaps made his biggest impact through his ground-breaking translational research. Currently, he is the principal investigator on a number of clinical trials and grants at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he and his team research upper aerodigestive tract malignancies, namely head and neck and esophageal cancer. Through conducting clinical trials and biomarker driven correlative studies, his goal is to impact the care and outcome of patients with these tumors. And he is doing so through many novel approaches. He noted:
"I’m working on a grant that explores genomic based approaches in oral cavity cancer. Currently, we’re looking at the mechanisms of resistance to EGFR [epidermal growth factor receptor] inhibition in head and neck cancer."
Saba is also a member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) head and neck cancer steering committee, and an elected member of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS). He serves on the American College of Radiology appropriateness criteria panel for head and neck cancer, and is a member of the National Cancer Institute's task force for recurrent metastatic head and neck cancer.
