Dr. Miles G. Cunningham Has Been Recognized Among the Top in His Industry by the Expert Network©

The Expert Network celebrates its newest member, Dr. Miles G. Cunningham

Dr. Miles G. Cunningham, Neuropsychiatrist, McLean Hospital, has joined The Expert Network, an invitation only service for distinguished professionals. Dr. Cunningham has been chosen as a Distinguished Doctor based on peer reviews and ratings, numerous recognitions, and accomplishments achieved throughout his career.

Dr. Cunningham outshines others in his field due to his extensive educational background, numerous awards and recognitions, and career longevity. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1985 from the University of Arkansas, he went on to pursue a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, focusing on reconstruction of the central nervous system with stem cell technology. His thesis was entitled “Transplantation Strategies for the Analysis of Brain Development and Repair”. Subsequently, he earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1996, with a special interest in neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology. Dr. Cunningham continued his medical training with a residency in adult psychiatry from 1997 through 2001 at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital where he subsequently completed a fellowship in neuropsychiatry in 2003.

"In terms of what we're trying to focus on, it's delivering not only physician visits and nurse practitioner visits at home, but also doing blood work, doing imaging, ordering tests and delivering prescriptions. Everything at home. While patients are taken care of at home, the family members can actually go to work instead of having to take them to different doctor offices, all while they get to have peace of mind."

Miles G. Cunningham, M.D., PhD, Neuropsychiatrist, McLean Hospital

With 20 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Cunningham brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his areas of expertise, neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology. When asked why he decided to pursue this specialization in medicine, Dr. Cunningham said:

"My interest in neuropsychiatry started very early in my training. I became intrigued by the underlying neurobiological substrates of mental illness. As an undergraduate neuroscientist, I studied the kindling phenomenon – which served as an experimental model for learning and memory as well as seizure disorders and recurrent psychiatric conditions."

As a thought-leader in his industry, Dr. Cunningham is widely renowned for his cutting-edge research in psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery. While completing his residency, he conducted neuroscience research in the laboratory of Dr. Francine Benes which focused on the study of the corticolimbic circuitry of psychopathology. Today, Dr. Cunningham directs the Laboratory for Neural Reconstruction, which studies emotional circuitry and psychopathology via precision engraftment of genetically engineered neural cells. There, he and his team have pioneered the use of therapeutic stem cells for the study and potential treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases by modulating or reconstructing the corticolimbic system using neural grafting techniques.

His prominence as both a researcher and a practicing psychiatrist gives Dr. Cunningham a unique vantage point from which to follow prevailing trends in psychiatry. Addiction, for example, is a special area of interest, the treatment of which is amenable to modulating the reward system using strategic stem cell engraftment. Although the crisis of addiction has been malignant, Dr. Cunningham is optomistic that science and communities can come together to solve this urgent problem. He noted:

"In terms of what we’re trying to focus on, it’s delivering not only physician visits and nurse practitioner visits at home, but also doing blood work, doing imaging, ordering tests and delivering prescriptions. Everything at home. While patients are taken care of at home, the family members can actually go to work instead of having to take them to different doctor offices, all while they get to have peace of mind."

Dr. Cunningham is the Executive Director of the Asniya, Inc. cross-cultural training program for medical students, the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board at Coretech Holdings in St. Louis, MO as well as the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the American Neuropsychiatric Association where he is also a Council Member. He is the founder and CSO for Atanse Inc. neurosurgical instrumentation company where he is also the Director of Business Development and works with Square Psychiatry, LLC, 38 Crafts Street in Newton, MA. Dr. Cunningham is also the Medical Director of InCognito Care, Inc. and the Laboratory Director of the Weymouth Primary Care and Counseling Center.
