With over 20 years dedicated to Medicine, Mann brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and, in particular, to his area of expertise in thoracic surgery. When asked why Mann decided to go into medicine, he said:

"I've always been interested in the human body and the human condition. Combine that with a desire to work with my hands, surgery became the natural choice."

As a thought-leader in his industry, Mann has been an NIH funded researcher in cardiac biology for the past ten years. His research program focuses on what he calls “translational” research on cardiac molecular biology and potential molecular therapy. His background in molecular biology and molecular medicine has enabled him to collaborate very closely with experts in thoracic oncology. He has specifically been studying molecular aspects of cancer biology as they pertain to improved diagnostic tests, prognostic analyses, and therapy. He noted:

"As an academic, my colleagues and I see our role as really trying to ride the wave of the most meaningful, innovative movements in our respective fields. I feel it’s my responsibility to be aware of what developments are taking place in my field and find areas in which I can contribute meaningfully... My research focuses on identifying better ways of understanding tumor biology on a molecular level and then of course trying to turn that in to meaningful therapeutic options for patients...."

Mann is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Heart Association, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the Western Thoracic Society, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.
