Elena Volfson, M.D., M.P.H., Medical Director, Behavioral Health Laboratory

With nearly twenty years dedicated to medicine, Volfson brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry and, in particular, to her area of expertise in psychiatry.

As a thought-leader in her industry, Dr. Volfson is one of the pioneers of Integrated Care psychiatry, a rapidly developing field of medicine. Integrated Care Psychiatrists guide and support primary care providers in taking care of patients with highly prevalent mild to moderate mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, sleep disorders, chronic pain and substance use. Those conditions are not severe enough to be seen in a specialty mental health clinic and can be taken care of within the primary care sector using the psychiatric expertise that is available on a flexible basis.

Dr. Elena Volfson was a Medical Director of the Behavioral Health Laboratory, an Integrated Care program in Philadelphia VA hospital from September 2007 until July 2015. This successful and award-winning program has been replicated in over thirty different VA hospitals across the country as well as in private sector medical systems. In August 2015 Dr. Volfson moved to Arizona and became a consultant for the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale to develop a similar integrated care system there. She noted:

"Integrated Care is probably the most rapidly developing field in psychiatry and very different models across the country are being implemented. As an addiction psychiatrist, I am very interested in developing non-addictive alternatives of treating pain, as well as treating tobacco and cannabis dependence."

Dr. Volfson is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She has lectured nationally at the Women’s Health Congress and American College of Physicians and multiple national VA conferences. She was a chair of the Women Psychiatrists Committee of the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society and has received the award for her contribution to the life of the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society. She has been recognized as one of the Top Doctors in Pennsylvania and nationally. She received the Jack Greenspan award in 2013 for establishing and maintaining her successful private practice.
