Medication assistance for the treatment of addiction as well as various psychotherapies have improved, including DBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, and Internal Family Assisted Therapy. I have also seen a decreasing stigma vis-à-vis treating addiction. People have finally come to the realization that addiction is a medical problem.

Dr. Paul brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and, in particular, to his area of expertise, the compassionate treatment of addictive disorders, comorbid anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, and addiction psychopharmacology. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in his specialty, Dr. Paul said:

"When I was in medical school and when I was in residency, the training in addiction medicine was really awful, since at the time there was much worse stigma against addicts. So I thought I would do an experiment in countertransference and work with addicts to see if I could actually get along with them. Because everyone was putting them down and saying they were hard to work with I wanted to challenge myself and see what it was like. The privilege of seeing people reclaim their lives has turned out to be great."

As a thought-leader in his specialty, Dr. Paul keeps himself apprised of new developments in addiction psychiatry in order to be able to offer his patients the best treatment methods available. In particular, he has witnessed tremendous shifts not only in how we treat addiction but how we treat addicts themselves. He noted:

"Medication assistance for the treatment of addiction as well as various psychotherapies have improved, including DBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, and Internal Family Assisted Therapy. I have also seen a decreasing stigma vis-à-vis treating addiction. People have finally come to the realization that addiction is a medical problem."

Dr. Paul's leading care has earned him numerous awards and honors, including Castle Connolly's Top Doctor Award, Vitals' Compassionate Doctor and Patients’ Choice Awards, and inclusion among U.S. News & World Report's Top 43 Addiction Psychiatrists in the U.S. He is also a proud member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, American Society of Addiction Medicine, American Psychiatric Association, and the Center for Self-Leadership.
