As a graduate student, he focused his doctoral dissertation on the impact of family influences on Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Sorkin worked for several years at Hoboken University Medical Center as an emergency room nurse prior to becoming an A.P.N. at Riverside Medical Group and the volunteer medical director for the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps in 2012, a position he continues to hold today.

I've been talking to our IT person about how I can find ways to enhance my patients' experience through innovative technology. Technology is certainly not going away and health care is not going away, so we have to figure out how to merge the two fields in a way that's advantageous for our patients. Right now, the biggest barrier towards certain aspects of technology and health care is insurance, so I constantly monitor how insurance influences the ability to use technology.

Craig Sorkin, D.N.P., A.P.N., Nurse Practitioner, Riverside Medical Group

With 15 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Sorkin brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry and, in particular, to his area of expertise, providing comprehensive care to children, young adults, adolescents, middle-aged adults, and older adults. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in this specialty, Dr. Sorkin said:

"9/11 is what got me into EMS. I thought I wanted to be a paramedic, but my mom thought nursing might be a better fit for me for several reasons. As usual, she was correct, and this decision led me to the beginning of a great career. Once I got into nursing I thought I might want to transition to being an M.D., but I had some really wonderful professors during nursing school who were nurse practitioners, and they brought me to a free medical clinic in Paterson, New Jersey called Eva’s Village Medical Clinic. They showed me what nurse practitioners could do for their patients and how they kind of combined the brains of a doctor and the heart of a nurse into caring for their patients."

Dr. Sorkin’s primary focus is to uphold a patient-centric care model where the patient is treated as a whole. As an NP, he is uniquely positioned to provide a combination of compassionate nursing care with a higher level of service. Dr. Sorkin was Riverside’s first nurse practitioner and he takes pride in utilizing his diverse medical background in the care he provides to his patients.

As a thought-leader in his specialty, Dr. Sorkin is passionate about educating the next generation of nurse practitioners. He routinely precepts NP students and was the lead writer for Adult-Gerontology and Family Nurse Practitioner, a McGraw-Hill education book for the Adult and Family Nurse Practitioner Board Review. Additionally, Dr. Sorkin recently took on the role of teaching as an associate professor with Herzing University in their Family NP and Adult NP programs.

Always looking for ways to make improvements within his field, Dr. Sorkin keeps his eye on prevailing trends in nursing and medicine. In particular, he is very interested in technology and its influences on health care. He noted:

"I’ve been talking to our IT person about how I can find ways to enhance my patients’ experience through innovative technology. Technology is certainly not going away and health care is not going away, so we have to figure out how to merge the two fields in a way that’s advantageous for our patients.
