Andrew E. Sloan, M.D., FACS, Director, Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center, UH Case Medical Center
With 20 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Sloan brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, neurosurgical oncology. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Sloan said:
"I had two family members die of cancer when I was in my early teens. They were both young and seemed to me to be otherwise pretty healthy, so it was very shocking to me that something like that could happen. I was a scientifically oriented kid, so I said to myself ‘maybe I can help, prevent this from happening to someone else.’"
In 2007, Dr. Sloan joined UH Case Western Reserve, and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Prior to coming to Cleveland, he was on faculty at the University of South Florida H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, as well as Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout his industrious career, he has held the role of visiting professor for countless residency students.
As a leader in his industry, Dr. Sloan is highly lauded for his research and contributions to neurosurgery. He has been recognized by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America” since 2003, and as one of the “Top Surgeons in America” since 2007. He has also received numerous other awards and recognitions over the course of his career, including the Clinical Research Career Development Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in 2000, and the National Brain Tumor Foundation Mahaley Award for Clinical Research in Neuro-Oncology, conferred at the 81st Annual AANS meeting on April 2013, among many others. In 2014, he was elected President of the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society (OSNS).
Dr. Sloan is perhaps best known for his innovative research on glioma vaccines and glioma stem cells, which has been funded by many prominent national organizations, including the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Ohio Third Frontier organization, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). Working at the cutting-edge of the field, he is currently helping to develop a new generation of neurosurgical simulators.
This prominence in the field gives Dr. Sloan a unique vantage point from which to follow prevailing trends in neurosurgery. Over the course of nearly twenty years practicing as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Sloan has been witness to some industry-wide shifts:
"We're doing things in an increasingly minimally invasive fashion, and we are starting to implement innovative approaches. Today, we are doing gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and immunotherapy. Those are things I'm very interested in."
Dr. Sloan is the Director of the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center at UH Seidman Cancer Center and the Neurological Institute, and serves as Professor and Vice-Chair of Neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, with joint appointments in Pathology and the Center for Translational Neuroscience.
