When asked why she decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Valencia said:

"The two most interesting science studies for me were medicine and astrophysics. I decided to become a physician but, at the same time, I was able to take a few courses in astronomy which is still one my hobbies.”

As a thought leader in her specialty, Dr. Valencia is also a distinguished teacher. Throughout her career, she has educated medical students, doctors, pediatric and psychiatry residents, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Beyond her private practice and teaching engagements, Dr. Valencia dedicates much of her energy to providing care to underserved communities. In addition to other activities, she is dedicated to helping documented immigrants with psychiatric symptoms avoid deportation to home countries where their life is at severe risk due to the impairment caused by a treatable psychiatric condition. Dr. Valencia understands the importance of helping this vulnerable segment of society. She noted:

"Along with my clinical team, I evaluate patients that are supposed to be deported from the United States back to countries where they were certainly going to be killed. I'm glad to say that all the patients I have seen have been granted permanent residency in the United States. After providing them with mental healthcare, we work with them to ensure that they continue to work, pay their taxes, and are productive members of society.”
