The law has started to evolve on issues such as expanded time-sharing and how much money fathers are expected to pay for child support, assuming that they are engaging with the children on a more frequent basis. Just recently, there was a change to how the Child Support Office handles cases. They used to not deal with matters of time-sharing, but the legislature passed a law that automatically grants time-sharing at least of every other weekend to the non-custodial parent—which tends to be the father—regardless of whether or not they can pay child support.

With more than 30 years of experience dedicated to law, Ms. Thompson-McClary brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry, and, in particular, to her areas of specialization, family and personal injury law. When asked why she decided to pursue a career in law, Ms. Thompson-McClary recalled the impact of growing up under segregation in South Florida:

"I have dreamed of becoming a lawyer since the second grade because of what I saw. I still remember segregation, I remember going to the back of the bus, I remember going through the back door of the doctor’s office. But I also remember the people who fought for civil rights, people like Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Martin Luther King, Andrew Young, and many others. I was moved by their work, and I wanted to change the world just as they had. That’s what led me to become a lawyer; I wanted to defend the powerless and to right wrongs where ever I could."

As a thought-leader in her field, Ms. Thompson-McClary is uniquely positioned to follow prevailing trends in family law. In particular, she has recently seen the ascendance of co-parenting in custody cases. She notes:

"The biggest trend I’m seeing in family law right now relates to the rights of fathers and co-parenting. The law has started to evolve on issues such as expanded time-sharing and how much money fathers are expected to pay for child support, assuming that they are engaging with the children on a more frequent basis. Just recently, there was a change to how the Child Support Office handles cases. They used to not deal with matters of time-sharing, but the legislature passed a law that automatically grants time-sharing at least of every other weekend to the non-custodial parent—which tends to be the father—regardless of whether or not they can pay child support."

She is also active in the League of Women Voters and the National Association of Professional Women.
